But the man who was ranked as the top prospect in North America was passed over for the second and third picks by the New Jersey Devils and Arizona Coyotes, who selected Simon Nemec and Logan Cooley respectively.
It was finally Seattle Kraken general manager Ron Francis who ended the 18-year-old center's long wait by selecting him fourth in the first round, and once at the podium, Wright gave the Canadiens' table a rather nasty look, as they ignored him at No. 1.
Some hockey fans may well wonder why Shane Wright slipped to the fourth pick this year, but as Mathis Therrien of Danslescoulisses.com reports, it would appear that the forward was not the number one pick for some teams.
While appearing on TVA Sports' La Dose podcast, journalist Renaud Lavoie stated that several NHL teams had doubts about Shane Wright and even that some of those teams had the Kingston Frontenacs forward at No. 6 on their top prospect list (yes, 6th!).
Still, a good slide for the one that most Canadiens fans were hoping to see in Montreal next fall.
Lavoie also adds that Wright will have an easier time developing in a market like Seattle than in a tough hockey market like Montreal.
With that, the TVA Sports reporter makes an interesting point. The young center won't necessarily be swarmed by reporters at his first professional training camp and the chances of him starting the season with the Kraken are greater than if he had been with the Habs.
Still, for the young man, it's a bit disappointing not to have been the very first of the 2022 draft, but he can take comfort in the fact that he will definitely be the face of the Seattle Kraken franchise for years to come.
