Among the hot topics currently surrounding the Montreal Canadiens is the future of Samuel Montembeault within the organization.

As reported by Cédrick Gervais from Marqueur.com, it seems that negotiations have been initiated by his agent, Paul Corbeil, and Kent Hughes regarding a contract extension, rumors that were confirmed by journalist Arpon Basu, who covers the activities of the CH for The Athletic.

The Quebec goaltender will be a free agent on July 1st and it is highly likely that he will be one of the most sought-after goaltenders on the market if he continues to deliver solid performances as he has since last season.

That said, on BPM Sports, Georges Laraque and Tony Marinaro had a discussion on this subject, and here are their comments:

«He becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer, so he knows very well that if the Canadiens don't give him what he wants, he will manage to find a buyer elsewhere. [...] His agent will not ask for less than four million dollars per season.» - Georges Laraque

«For me, he will get more than Jake Allen's contract ($3.85 million). If the Canadiens give him a new deal and make him their number one goalie, he will earn more than Jake Allen, that's for sure.» - Tony Marinaro

This would be a contract almost identical to that of star goaltender Jake Oettinger of the Dallas Stars.

These are quite interesting comments from both men, and we can expect that Montembeault will not sign a deal for less than an annual salary of 4 or 5 million dollars per season.
