Earlier, we learned of Scott Mellanby's departure from the Montreal Canadiens organization. However, we didn't know the reason.
Pierre LeBrun has just explained this sudden departure. Fasten your seatbelt, it's huge!
According to him, Mellanby would have already had discussions with Geoff Molson regarding a general manager position or even president of hockey operations. However, Molson confirmed yesterday that he was no longer in the running for either of these positions. Mellanby has obviously left, as greater opportunities may be available elsewhere.
What does this confirm? The imminent departure of Marc Bergevin, of course. Why would Molson have offered Mellanby a general manager position, if it wasn't to replace Marc Bergevin? File to follow!
Heads are starting to roll in Montreal and it seems to be far from over.
