According to informed sources, Kent Hughes aggressively tried to acquire Dubois, as part of the draft, but the whole thing would have failed because the Jets required a player that the Tricolore absolutely did not want to trade. (Probably Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield or Kaiden Guhle)
On that note, and to make a good logical recap, Arpon Basu and Marc-Antoine Godin made some interesting points, on the latest edition of the The Athletic Support podcast.
According to Basu, the eventual acquisition (or not) of Pierre-Luc Dubois, by the Montreal Canadiens, would depend entirely on the progress of the team's new center Kirby Dach.
If Kirby Dach becomes the solid second center that he absolutely has the potential to become, if he becomes a dominant player in the NHL, the chances of Dubois landing in Montreal would decrease.
The Habs' two future centers would then be Suzuki and Dach.
Otherwise, if Kirby Dach is slow to develop and establish himself as a second center, the option of adding a center of Dubois' caliber would become even more attractive to Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton.
Pierre-Luc Dubois could be traded to the Montreal Canadiens on one condition: if Dach gets into trouble.
We can imagine that, considering the high price asked by the Jets, the Habs' management chose to give Kirby Dach a chance first, and that makes perfect sense.
If they see that it doesn't work out with the former Blackhawk, then they might be more inclined to pay the necessary price to get Dubois.
We like this idea!
If the CH wants to acquire Pierre-Luc Dubois immediately, here is what they will have to offer the Jets:
