A few days ago, Pierre LeBrun launched a real bombshell by mentioning that the Habs would be in pursuit of a big player when the free agent market opens this summer.

According to JiC, it's huge and there is already a big impact around the league. The host addressed the subject during his Friday season ticket.

«I would not have been really confident that the Hughes-Gorton duo would manage to attract a free agent to Montreal. But the arrivals of Martin St-Louis and Vincent Lecavalier really changed the situation. The word is spreading very quickly through the National League. Playing for St-Louis is trippy. And players want to play within a system that benefits and enhances them. An offense-oriented system. The role of Lecavalier in this hunt for free agents is not to be overlooked either. He will meet players and sell them the Montreal project. Vincent's presence and charisma could make a huge difference in sales pitches. For me, the Habs plan is called "reconstruction in motion". This is the best I have found for "reset on the fly"."

These comments are interesting, but it should be remembered that St-Louis and Lacavalier have only been there for a few games and that the Habs head coach still has no guarantee of getting a job next season. It's not easy to assess whether star players will want to leave their organization to join a rebuilding team.

However, this is what happened in New York during the Jeff Gorton era. Artemi Panarin and Adam Fox notably joined the Rangers who were in the midst of rebuild. Since then, they have a team that improves year after year and will knock on the door of the playoffs this year.
