The Montreal Canadiens announced that Finnish defenseman Sami Niku has not been claimed on waivers. He has been assigned to the team's reserve squad.
The 25-year-old is also available to join the Laval Rocket, should the Habs want to add some punch to their AHL club's offense.
Niku has six points in 13 games with the Habs this year and has maintained a +3 rating. The organization obviously preferred the young Kale Clague, who is still with the big club.
Niku signed a one-season contract with the Tricolore on September 24. This two-part deal pays him $750,000 in the NHL and $425,000 in the AHL including a $475,000 guarantee.
