For a very long time, Shane Wright has been considered to be the first overall pick in the 2022 draft. However, many doubt that he is the best player in the draft and believe that he doesn't have what it takes to go first.
The principal, however, is confident that he is indeed the man for the job. On Hockey Central, he mentioned deserving the honor of going out at number one.
"Shane Wright says he wants to be selected first overall at this year's #NHLDraft: "I want to be No. 1; that's where I believe I am, based on all my work my whole life, my whole career has led up to this point... This is where I deserve to be and this is where I want to be."
In addition to demonstrating his desire to come out on top, Wright mentioned that he likes to watch, and be inspired by, two NHL players, Patrice Bergeron and Auston Matthews.
"Shane Wright on Hockey Central was asked which NHL players he likes to watch, he mentioned Matthews and Bergeron, he mentioned their two-way games as an aspect of their game that he respects."
If Wright were to become just a shadow of those two players, the team that drafts him will have quite a player in their lineup. We'll know this Tuesday night who will have the chance to draft first overall as the NHL lottery takes place. The Canadiens have a 25% chance of finishing the night with the first overall pick.
