Today, the National Hockey League revealed its nominations for various individual awards, including the Vézina Trophy (awarded to the NHL's goaltender of the year) and the Norris Trophy (awarded to the NHL's defenseman of the year).
The Vézina Trophy is awarded each season to the goaltender judged to be the best in the regular season. Last year, Marc-Andre Fleury won the award.
For this season, the informer Kevin Weekes has just informed us of the identity of the three finalists and there is a surprise.
The three nominees are :
- New York Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin (2.07/.935)
- Nashville Predators goalie Juuse Saros (2.68/.918)
and
- Calgary Flames goalie Jakob Markstrom (2.22/.922).
We immediately notice the absence of the Carolina Hurricanes' goalie, Frederik Andersen. A big surprise, according to many!
This season, Andersen has maintained a goals-against-average of 2.17 and a .922 save percentage.
Either way, Shesterkin is the clear favorite here.
For the 2021-22 NHL Defenseman of the Year, no surprises here: Josi, Makar and Hedman are the finalists.
