Why are they talking about it?
The general manager took some people by surprise when he announced that he would not offer a contract to Logan Mailloux this summer and that the youngster would still have to prove himself as an individual.
THERE IS NEWS
As reported by my colleague Keven Mawn (Fanadiens.com), sources within the Montreal Canadiens organization have revealed some important inside information to Montreal Hockey Now.
So Mailloux would have received a "Bona Fide Offer".
What is a "Bona Fide Offer"?
Basically, it allows the Montreal Canadiens to keep the exclusive negotiation rights to Mailloux.
So this is Kent Hughes saying "I'm not signing him this summer, but I want to keep his rights because I may sign him next year".
The CH had to make a final decision before June 1st. It is now done and Mailloux will remain the property of the Montreal Canadiens for at least one more year.
In making this decision, Kent Hughes is (not surprisingly) giving up a free second round pick. Remember that if the CH had released Logan Mailloux before June 1, 2022, Montreal would have received a late second round 2022 pick as compensation. (and Mailloux would have been available again in the draft for 2022)
The next date to watch? June 1, 2023, when this same process will start again.
Let's remember that the last option available to the Montreal management is to trade Logan Mailloux's rights to another NHL team.
