The Avalanche swept Connor McDavid's team in four games, and let's just say that the performance of Oilers goaltender Mike Smith was, let's face it, pretty uneven during the series. At times very solid and at other times nonchalant, it is obvious that the team's general manager, Ken Holland, will have to bring in reinforcements in front of the Oilers' net this summer.
What if the Oilers could play a trick on the team that just eliminated them in four games?
As reported by my colleague Alex Néron of Fanadiens.com, Avalanche goaltender Darcy Kuemper will be an uncompensated free agent this summer it is highly likely that the Saskatoon native will test the market.
And according to Sportsnet tipster Jeff Marek, Kuemper has been in the Oilers' sights before and it wouldn't be surprising to see them still in the running to acquire him.
The 32-year-old goaltender is coming off by far the best season of his career with 37 wins in 57 games, a 2.54 GAA and a .921 save percentage. He also recorded five shutouts and because of the year he just had, he should probably get the contract of his life.
This would be a big loss for the Avalanche and, in a way, sweet revenge for Edmonton.
However for the Oilers, Mike Smith is still under contract for another season but with an annual salary of $2.2 million, he could very well be the Oilers second goalie next season.
