The future number one goalie of the Habs has reportedly been identified and it is not Samuel Montembeault
In his latest column on TVA Sports, host Jean-Charles Lajoie made a statement that has stirred discussion, but he explains it well.
According to him, Samuel Montembeault is not the real future number one goalie for the Montreal Canadiens in front of the net.
Instead, he talks about other young players in the organization, like Jakub Dobes, Jacob Fowler, Quentin Miller, and Yevgeni Volokhin.
"Fowler, Miller, and Volokhin were all drafted by the Canadiens last June, Fowler 69th overall in the third round, Miller 128th in the fourth round, and Volokhin 144th overall in the fifth round. [...]
Cayden Primeau might play regularly in the National League one day, but I doubt it will be here in Montreal. And my judgment is not based solely on his third period in yesterday's game against the Panthers.
In other words, the next real number one goalie of the Canadiens is among the 4 young players mentioned earlier in this post.
Clearly, the next real number one goalie of the Canadiens will not be Samuel Montembeault." - JiC It's an interesting point and it's definitely a possibility.
After all, if the CH is a Stanley Cup contender in, say, three or four years, Sam will already be over 30 years old.
We would like to add our voice to that of Jean-Charles Lajoie, to discuss the possibility that the real future number one of the Canadiens is currently elsewhere.
We are still amazed that Yaroslav Askarov is available on the trade market and that he was offered in trades at the draft.
We're talking about a potential future star goalie, a real elite goalie in the mold of Andrei Vasilevskiy, Ilya Sorokin, and Igor Shesterkin.
Askarov, an 11th overall pick in 2020, is completely dominating the AHL this season and he's only 21 years old. If I were the GM of the Canadiens, I would absolutely target him!
In short, we must also keep in mind the possibility that the future number one of the CH is not yet within the organization. That's mainly the point.
Kent Hughes proved it with Kirby Dach and Alex Newhook, he can make big moves via trade.
