When Mike Bossy passed away on April 15, Marc de Foy, veteran columnist and journalist for the Journal de Montréal, spoke with Guy Lafleur about the former Islanders star and wrote one of his columns.
But as my colleague Alexandre Desrosiers of Rumeursdetransaction.com reports, the phone call, which de Foy made to Lafleur, was not easy and he recounted the thread of events to Mario Langlois on 98.5's Les amateurs de sports Tuesday night.
"I had asked him if he was willing to give an interview to talk about Mike Bossy. At the time, I didn't know how bad he was. I knew he had been off his medication since Christmas. 30 minutes later, my phone rings and I answer it and the first thing I did was not understand. I said "Excuse me?" and he answered "It's Guy". His voice there was very difficult to hear. His voice was very weak. He had respect for Mike Bossy and he didn't want to leave without paying tribute to Bossy."
The veteran journalist later says he experienced great emotions and as he hung up the phone, he realized that it was most likely the last time he would have the chance to talk to the Blonde Demon.
"I must admit that this has not happened to me often. This was perhaps the first time it had happened to me. When I hung up, the conversation had lasted 13 and a half minutes, I was shaken, because I had told myself that this was the last time I spoke to him. I was shaken."
Once the subject of the death of Guy Lafleur ended, the conversation then turned to the current situation of the Habs and de Foy showed himself rather pessimistic that the team will be successful within the next two, where or even three years and he added that the organization was treading water for 30 years.
He also said that it is high time that the organization can develop stars on the attack because according to him, the only position where the Habs have had star players in the last 30 years was in front of the net.
Let's just say that de Foy is not wrong in what he says, but with the emergence of Caufield and Suzuki and the possibility of adding a player like Shane Wright to the lineup, the veteran columnist's wish may very well come true before long.
