One thing is certain, the number 6 will have a successor next season as captain of the Montreal Canadiens, as Kent Hughes mentioned.
On the other hand, this statement of Kent Hughes indicates that Shea Weber will not return to the game, but he could have a huge role in the organization. The GM obviously has big plans for Weber.
"We have offers for Shea who could be a great asset to the organization with his experience and his qualities as a player, as a leader. I don't know what role that might translate into yet, but we have plans for Shea to keep him with us," said Kent Hughes.
As Jonathan Drouin said earlier this season, Weber is already working a bit on the administrative side for the Habs, but a more official role could be in order for him.
His contract is still active and he is on the long-term injured list. Could the Tricolore trade his pact to a team trying to reach the salary cap or even deal him to the Nashville Predators to avoid a monetary penalty?
Even though he will likely not be able to play professional hockey again, his contribution to an organization could be of paramount importance. His hockey experience and leadership skills could move him significantly up the administrative ladder, if he so chooses.
One thing is for sure, if Weber had been around on Saturday night, Jeff Petry would have been talking into his helmet... No one would touch Weber's goalie when he was playing, or the players involved would pay the price.
