Now that the Flames have been eliminated in the second round of the NHL playoffs, the picture is becoming clearer for Montreal in the 2022 draft.
Acquired in the deal that sent Tyler Toffoli to Calgary last February, the Flames' 2022 first-round pick, which belongs to Montreal, has gained some value.
In short, the CH started the playoffs with the 29th pick, but now they're up to 27th (at least), thanks to the Oilers, and that can go up another two spots.
THAT'S NOT ALL
We've just done a little overview of the positive side of the outcome of the Battle of Alberta, but there's another impact.
With the Oilers moving on, the CH could "lose" a pick in the 2022 draft. Why?
Remember that the second round pick acquired by Kent Hughes from Edmonton in the Brett Kulak trade last March comes with a special condition.
He belongs to Montreal until proven otherwise, but that could change.
EXPLANATIONS
If the Oilers make it to the Stanley Cup Final, their pick in 2022 will go to the Chicago Blackhawks instead.
In the Duncan Keith trade (between Edmonton and Chicago), the Hawks acquired a 2022 third-round pick from the Oilers, but that third pick could become a 2022 second-round pick if McDavid's team makes it to the Grand Final.
If that happens, Chicago will have priority and the Habs will have to give them the Oilers' pick.
Montreal would get the 2023 second round pick from Edmonton (instead of 2022) and the pick would go back one year.
In short, if the Edmonton Oilers make it to the Stanley Cup Final, the Habs lose a 2022 2nd round pick and gain a 2023 2nd round pick.
