At the last trade deadline, Max Domi was traded by the Columbus Blue Jackets. He joined the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Aidan Hreschuk, who was drafted 94th in the last NHL draft.

Today we learned that this deal almost never happened. As reported by Pierre LeBrun on RDS on Thursday night, the deal was sent to the league at 2:59 p.m., one minute before the deadline.

Don Waddell, the Canes' GM, told the tipster that a much more complicated deal was about to be completed. That deal, which also involved Florida, was not approved by the league. It was 2:40 p.m. at the time and the teams now had less than 20 minutes before renegotiating.

LeBrun says Carolina was desperate to get a forward. That's why they focused on a smaller deal involving Max Domi.

As the tipster says, if Max Domi scores a big goal in the playoffs and the Canes win the Stanley Cup, this is a story to remember!
