The names of Nick Suzuki and Joel Edmundson are often mentioned to succeed Shea Weber. Recently, Edmundson has had the support of several experts, including 98.5 game analyst Dany Dubé.
But for a former Habs captain, Edmundson should not be considered for this prestigious title.
During his appearance on the RDS show L'Antichambre, Vincent Damphousse stated that the role of CH captain should be given to an impact player on the team, a profile that doesn't really fit Edmundson.
Damphousse also added that right now, Nick Suzuki may be too young to be the next captain, but that he could see him in that role in two or three years. And even Cole Caufield could be considered eventually according to the analyst.
Damphousse launches an interesting debate here: does a player have to be dominant, does he have to be an impact player to be a captain in the NHL?
Third- and fourth-row players as captains have been seen before, but it's pretty rare. Obviously, Edmundson is more useful than a simple third or fourth trio player, but we understand the point.
Whose side are you on?
While not an impact player on the scoresheet, Edmundson is a huge part of the roster. With Ben Chiarot gone and Jeff Petry most likely gone at the end of the season, Edmundson will become the veteran of the defensive squad and will certainly be a mentor to the young defensemen in the organization.
With his contract expiring after the 2023-2024 season, he could become the transitional captain until Suzuki and Caufield mature and the team becomes more competitive again. With Damphousse saying that Suzuki could be ready in two or three years, we would be right on schedule.
That's a lot of talk!
