Kristopher Letang is sure to be one of the most interesting uncompensated free agents this summer.

While Montreal is already salivating at the prospect of him signing with the Habs, media people in Pittsburgh are expecting him to leave the Penguins after the season. Among them is Angie Carducci, who covers the team's activities.

As reported by my colleague Christian Matte of Marqueur.com, she was on TSN 690 to discuss the issue with Tony Marinaro and doesn't expect Letang to be back next year.

"They might not be able to keep him, he's going to get a lot on the market."

The journalist mentions that the Penguins would not be able to keep his services and she believes that the defenseman still has a lot to offer and that it is possible to see the Quebecer sign with the Canadiens this summer.

"He still has a lot to offer. He's a very skilled player, unique as an offensive defenseman, creative. There aren't many players like him in the NHL, he would be hard to replace in Pittsburgh."

"He has many reasons for wanting to go to Montreal and the more the season goes on, the more possible the idea of him joining the Habs."

That's all well and good, but it has to be said that Kent Hughes is likely to be pretty tight with the payroll this summer with a few contracts to negotiate and Letang is expected to cost in the neighborhood of $7 million a year (at least according to Pittsburgh reporter Josh Yohe, among others).

The price for Letang would be: $7 million.

We're not there yet, but this will undoubtedly be one of the hottest issues in Montreal in the coming months.

Would you sign him if you were in Kent Hughes' shoes?
