It's quite a bombshell that we learned this afternoon when Jonathan Drouin claimed that the CH captain was somehow retired. Of course, it's an open secret in Montreal, as many signs point in this direction without it being made official.
But why? What is it that is pushing Shea Weber so hard not to make his retirement official?
According to Danslescoulisses.com, there are two main reasons that explain the situation surrounding the Tricolore captain. First of all, Weber wants to avoid losing the 12 million dollars in salary he still has on his contract, which is perfectly normal.
Also, if he retires prematurely, his former team, the Nashville Predators, will be assessed a penalty. Having greatly enjoyed his time in Nashville and still having a great deal of respect for that organization, it is understandable that Weber would not want to inflict this on the organization that drafted him in 2003.
It's not surprising to see Jonathan Drouin make such comments. CH fans will have to get used to the idea that Weber should not put on the blue-white-red uniform again. However, nothing prevents him from staying with the organization. Could he be offered a position off the ice? The chances are very good!
