Disaster in the Leafs' net: Toronto could be playing without a goalie tonight in Tampa Bay?
As you may know, the Maple Leafs, the situation in Toronto's net is very fragile at the moment.
Their number one goaltender, Ilya Samsonov, is slightly injured following his team's game against the Canadiens, and Toronto currently finds itself in an utterly incredible situation.
Samsonov played last night on his injured groin and made 45 saves.
With one week to go before the NHL playoffs begin, the Maple Leafs are playing a completely meaningless game tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Their position in the standings is 100% settled, and they really don't want to play Samsonov tonight.
The risk of aggravating his injury is far too great, just a week before the playoffs.
"Extremely curious to see who will be in net for Toronto in Tampa Bay tonight. Don't think it will be Samsonov - he shouldn't play either, it makes no sense. So, who does that leave? (Continued)...
If they don't get Woll on emergency conditions... Nick Chenard, who dressed last night, is only eligible for one game according to ATO rules. This could really be something."
Elliotte Friedman
If the NHL still refuses the emergency call-up of goaltender Joseph Woll, as it has for a week, Toronto will literally find itself without a goaltender to dress.
This would be a first in the franchise's history.
By the way, the NHL could very well refuse Woll's emergency call-up because it would be a situation created by the Leafs (according to the league). They don't have the necessary cap space.
At Toronto's morning skate today, Woll was not there:
"Toronto had two mystery goalies skate ahead of tonight's completely meaningless game in Tampa.
An amateur tryout goalie could end up facing Andrei Vasilevskiy for Toronto at 7 pm ET tonight. That's huge." Excuse me?

Another observer came up with a crazy theory:
"Crazy off-the-wall thought... Just play the entire game 6-on-5 without a goaltender."
A story to follow today.
