As we reported throughout the day on Wednesday, it seems that Kent Hughes had plenty of options with his pick. According to the excellent Frank Seravalli, no less than five concrete trade offers were proposed to him.
Now we learn that Kent Hughes reportedly turned down two major trades.
One with the Detroit Red Wings and one with the Nashville Predators.
Here's the rundown:
Detroit Red Wings
Steve Yzerman really wanted to move up and get the CH's pick. He reportedly offered picks #9 and #17 in addition to a young defenseman OR a young goalie. Detroit eventually selected Nate Danielson (#9) and Axel Sandin-Pellikka (#17) with their two picks.
This information comes from the insider El Cloun who has proven himself numerous times over the past few years.
Nashville Predators
The organization's new GM, Barry Trotz, seemingly wanted to steal the spotlight as the draft was in his city. He reportedly offered picks #15 and #24 in addition to the future young goalie Yaroslav Askarov.
Nashville finally selected Matthew Wood (#15) and Tanner Molendyk (#24) with their two picks.
The Preds' offer seemed particularly enticing!
Perhaps accepting one of these offers would have helped fans better accept the loss of Michkov? But why exactly does this selection, or non-selection, hurt the fans so much?
Michkov was eventually selected 7th overall, long after the Ducks, Blue Jackets, and Sharks had also passed over to select less talented forwards than the Russian. Why blame the CH for doing the same?
Moving back to the 9th pick, for example, would have meant taking the risk that Reinbacher would be selected by the Coyotes at the 6th pick, who chose another defenseman. Kent Hughes did well to choose HIS player when he could. A player who, let's remember, has a very high ceiling according to many.
