Alexis Lafrenière played the third year of his entry-level contract in the NHL this season. Expectations were very high in New York for the player who was drafted first overall in the 2020 NHL Draft, and the Quebec native doesn't seem to have met them after only three seasons in the NHL.
According to rumors, the forward might leave the Big Apple this summer. If not him, it could very well be the young Kaapo Kakko.
It didn't take long for rumors involving the Canadiens to emerge on social media. For several days now, many have been suggesting that the Quebecer should be brought back to town. It's worth noting that Georges Laraque once said, without hesitation, that he would trade the Canadiens' 6th overall pick, if they stay in that position in the draft, for Lafrenière.
For his part, Lafrenière himself isn't doing anything to silence the rumors. He recently posted a photo on his social media that has generated a lot of buzz.
Is this a precursor to a future transaction or simply to let us know that he's happy to be back in town for the summer? We'll find out soon enough!
Let's remember that the Quebec native will become a restricted free agent this summer. It will be interesting to see the salary granted to him by the team holding his rights. In 81 games this season, he accumulated 16 goals and 23 assists for a total of 39 points. He also has 91 points in 216 games since entering the NHL.
