If the Canadiens' general manager, Kent Hughes, does indeed decide to make a move this summer to acquire Dubois, it is unclear what it will take to persuade his Jets counterpart, Kevin Cheveldayoff.
The possibility of a Jacob Trouba-like trade has been raised. As a reminder, in 2019, the Jets received a first-round pick and defenseman Neal Pionk from the Rangers in exchange for Trouba.
Jeff Gorton was the Rangers' GM at the time. In these circumstances, would the Florida Panthers' first-round pick in 2023 and a player similar to Dubois (Josh Anderson?) be enough to convince the Jets?
It is definitely a possibility.
Now, what would Pierre-Luc Dubois' contract look like upon arriving in Montreal?
Considering that a long-term deal is expected, two comparisons come to mind: the contracts of Mathew Barzal and Roope Hintz.
Aged 25 and 26, both will start their new deals next season. We are talking about an eight-year, $73.2 million contract for Barzal and an eight-year, $67.6 million contract for Hintz.
Dubois, who will be 25 this summer, should certainly demand a salary around nine million dollars per season, taking these comparisons into account.
Will Kent Hughes be willing to grant him such a contract? If he truly wants Dubois' services in the coming years, he will not really have a choice but to agree to this deal.
