It's no secret that Erik Karlsson wants to be traded. The veteran defenseman has been vocal about his desire to win a Stanley Cup, which won't happen in San Jose. While it's easier said than done, we might be getting closer to a potential move for Karlsson.

Karlsson to the Canes

That's right, a new trade proposal would send Erik Karlsson to the Carolina Hurricanes in order to fulfill his dream of winning a Stanley Cup.

The proposed deal would see San Jose receive a HAUL in return for Karlsson, as the Sharks would acquire defenseman Brett Pesce, goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov, as well as 1st and 2nd round draft picks.

While the Hurricanes would be giving up a lot for Karlsson, they'd be getting the all-star at 70% of his original cap hit. This means Karlsson would only count for $8.05 million against Carolina's cap hit, while San Jose would pay the other $3.45 million.

Term is Important

While getting a player of Karlsson's caliber would be massive for Carolina, what makes it even better is how long they'd have him. This upcoming season included, Carolina would have Karlsson under contract for four more seasons. When you factor in his discounted cap hit, this seems like a no-brainer for GM Don Waddell.

San Jose is almost certainly fielding offers from different teams, be we don't see how many offers would beat this one. Carolina is giving San Jose an amazing young goaltender, future draft picks, and a premium asset in Brett Pesce.

If San Jose wants, they could easily flip Pesce for more assets, including another 1st round pick and then some. If this offer is on the table, San Jose should seriously consider it.
