RUMOUR: Martin St-Louis pushing the Habs and Kent Hughes to acquire Vancouver Canucks forward Conor Garland
A very special rumour is currently circulating on the web and is being relayed by numerous media outlets, so here it is.
Let's remember, however, that it is just a rumour.
Apparently, Martin St-Louis is trying to convince Kent Hughes to acquire the small forward Conor Garland, at least, he would like him to.
Garland is a player that the Vancouver Canucks have been trying to trade for a while, notably because of his salary.
He earns $4.95 million for two more seasons (until 2026).
What's intriguing about him is that, like Sean Monahan in the summer of 2022, Garland has a negative value on the trade market.
This means that to acquire him, not only would the Canadiens not have to pay, but in addition, Kent Hughes would receive a solid draft pick as compensation.
Something like...
Conor Garland and a 2nd round pick (and possibly a prospect), in exchange for future considerations.
In short, according to Eklund, Martin St-Louis has been praising Garland's merits to his bosses Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton.
We doubt it, but well, that's what's going around.
"I know the Canadiens are talking in Vancouver right now about Conor Garland, and they would love to pull off a trade if the Canucks retain 50% of the salary.
I'm told the Canucks don't want to retain more than 30/35% of his salary at the moment, and that's the sticking point. One imagines that a trade is possible.
Martin St-Louis is apparently working hard on this one." - Eklund
Take it with a grain of salt, but this is what has been put forward.
Garland is a 5-foot-10-inch and 165-pound forward who stays healthy despite a very spirited style of play.
He has 3 points in 10 games this season, after collecting nearly 50 points, including 20 goals, last season. He is 27 years old.
This gives us the opportunity to ask you the question.
If you were the GM of the CH, would you make a trade like this one?
TO MONTREAL: Conor Garland at 70% of his salary + 2nd round pick
TO VANCOUVER: Future considerations and 30% of Garland's salary
