Trade concluded between the Canadiens and the Capitals: another ridiculous offer was made and it says a lot about the Edmundson trade
As you know, over the past weekend, there was a trade between the Montreal Canadiens and the Washington Capitals involving defenseman Joel Edmundson.
Many were disappointed with the return (3rd and 7th round picks) especially considering that the Habs retained 50% of Edmundson's salary, but know that it could have been much worse.
See what the excellent Marco D'Amico mentioned:
«The Canadiens would have been the ones to pay if they had not retained salary, according to sources.»
Wow! So it's a good trade from Kent Hughes under the circumstances.
Let's not forget that guys like Ryan Johansen, Matt Duchene, Filip Zadina and many others were given away for free, or were bought out, simply because teams are so incredibly tight under the NHL's salary cap.
It puts things into perspective.
According to D'Amico's sources, without salary retention, the trade could have looked like this:
TO MONTREAL: Future considerations
ELSEWHERE: Joel Edmundson + draft pick
At least one team would have made an offer like this. That says a lot.
