In the last few minutes, as reported by my colleague Keven Mawn, here is what observer Randy Timmins, well-known to fans of the Montreal Canadiens, just proposed.

If the Dubois trade to MTL collapses, there's a deal to be made with WSH. The Capitals want the 5th pick, the Canadiens would get the 8th pick, along with a first-round pick next year + Mantha (who has a negative value). This happens ONLY IF Michkov is the remaining prospect once the Canadiens are on the podium at the 5th rank.

Interesting! We keep saying this, but we would really prefer if the Canadiens just stayed at the 5th rank and drafted Michkov.

However, if Kent Hughes intends to ignore Michkov, then this becomes a very interesting transaction.

IN MONTREAL:

#8 overall pick 2023

WSH's 1st round pick 2024

Anthony Mantha

IN WASHINGTON:

#5 overall pick 2023 (Matvei Michkov)

The Caps would probably make the trade, because they really want Michkov. He would be their new franchise player, and the transition from Ovechkin to him seems absolutely logical and natural.

On the CH side, Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton make sure to draft either David Reinbacher, Ryan Leonard, Zach Benson or Dalibor Dvorsky, while getting their hands on another valuable 1st round pick for 2024 and a very talented Quebecois in Anthony Mantha.

Would you do it?

Mantha, 28 years old, is a 6 feet 5 inches forward who has amassed 27 points in 67 games this season. He earns $5.7 million per season until 2024.
