A few weeks after his arrival as GM of the Habs, Kent Hughes completed some solid trades, including sending Brett Kulak to the Edmonton Oilers.
As reported by my colleagues at Marqueur, this transaction has just been finalized, now that Montreal has drafted with the Oilers' 2024 7th round pick.
In 2022, it's worth noting that Kent Hughes traded Brett Kulak to Edmonton in exchange for William Lagesson, a 2022 second-round pick, and a 2024 seventh-round pick.
The 2022 second-round pick indeed turned into Lane Hutson, and the 2024 seventh-round pick has now become Rasmus Bergqvist.
Bergqvist, 19, is a 6-foot-2, 181-pound Swedish defenseman who tallied 12 points in 36 games last season in the junior ranks in Sweden. (30 penalty minutes)
Thus, this young defenseman completes the Brett Kulak transaction.
Here is the complete and final transaction:
Yes, it's a home run for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens.
Kulak, 30, scored 16 points in 82 games this season with the Oilers, maintaining a +11 differential.
As for Lane Hutson, the 20-year-old defenseman seems on track to become a significant NHL player, having scored 2 points in 2 games with the Montreal Canadiens. (49 points in 38 games in the NCAA in 2023-24)
