While many would like to see him join the Canadiens, a reputable journalist recently explained why that won't happen.
In a recent article for the Toronto Star, Nick Kypreos noted that the rift between the two organizations following the offer sheets for Sebastian Aho and Jesperi Kotkaniemi will ruin Kent Hughes' chances, even though he wasn't there at the time, of acquiring the talented forward from the Canes.
It is understood that even though Don Waddell and Marc Bergevin are no longer part of the organizations, Canes' owner Tom Dundon still holds this matter close to his heart. Knowing that he is looking for a GM who will only be there to communicate with his NHL counterparts and gather information, and not to make hockey decisions, it is clear that the relationship with Montreal is definitively closed.
It's quite incredible how much a boss can be so involved in the hockey operations of his team.
Last season with the Hurricanes, Necas accumulated 53 points, including 24 goals, in 77 games. His best season in the NHL was in 2022-2023 when he finished with no less than 71 points.
If Kent Hughes truly wants a player of this caliber to help his top-six, he will have to look elsewhere.
Also according to Pierre LeBrun, Hughes would not be willing to pay the price to acquire Trevor Zegras.
This price, according to information gathered by Arpon Basu, would be none other than David Reinbacher or Kaiden Guhle. It's something to think about, especially to avoid repeating the transactions of Ryan McDonagh or Mikhail Sergachev...
It will be interesting to see who the Habs' GM will target.
