Last Thursday was a very big day for the Montreal Canadiens, as Kent Hughes completed a trade with the Calgary Flames.
It was recently the turn of Flames general manager Brad Treliving to react to the trade, and he commented on it by admitting that he is really disappointed in one thing:
Brad Treliving, on having to give a first-round pick to Montreal: "I absolutely hated having to do that, but we didn't have room (on the payroll), we were handcuffed, and we had to free up money very quickly."
- Remarks reported by Eric Engels
Treliving goes on to explain that he really would have preferred to find another solution, but he had to do it very quickly (in order to sign Nazem Kadri) and Kent Hughes was his only quick option.
So he decided to fold, figuring it would give him a chance to get his hands on Kadri, a player with 87 points (in 71 games) last season.
This is obviously very positive for Montreal Canadiens fans, because we realize that Hughes took full advantage of the situation to make Calgary pay and to strike, shall we say, a blow for the organization.
In addition to a free first round pick, the CH gets Sean Monahan for free :
"He's really a golden human being, everyone loved him here, and physically he's fine. We absolutely expect him to be ready for the start of the season and he'll finally be healthy and 100%, which unfortunately he hasn't been able to be for us for a long time.
It's unfortunate circumstances, but the Canadiens just got their hands on a solid player and a great person. We're happy for him, you don't find many better young men than him."
- Brad Treliving
We are really looking forward to seeing him in action! Remember, he's only 27 years old and had 82 points and 34 goals (in 78 games) in 2019. At the time, he was one of the best first centers in the NHL.
