At the 24th pick of the 2014 draft, Marc Bergevin and the Montreal Canadiens selected Russian forward Nikita Scherbak. While there were high hopes for the young man who had respectively scored 78 and 82 points in the WHL, he, like many first-round picks from that time, greatly disappointed.
He didn't find success in Montreal or in the NHL, but at least found love in the city. He met his future wife, Laurie Legault, there, and had a child with her (and another one on the way). She didn't hesitate to follow him in the second part of his career when he returned to his home country to play in the KHL.
After two years in the KHL, he played for many teams in various European leagues. However, we learned this week that Scherbak will not return to his most recent club and will have to find work for the upcoming season. That's why Andrew Zadarnowski thinks that Scherbak could bring his family back to Quebec and play for the Trois-Rivières Lions.
«Nikita Scherbak will not return to Slovan in the Slovak Extraliga. He would be an interesting marquee player for the Trois-Rivières Lions to build a team around in my opinion. With name recognition to attract fans, he could also live in/near Montreal with his wife.»
This addition to the Lions would be a huge marketing coup, as Scherbak's name is well known to CH fans. If he could regain the success he had in junior, he would be a plus for the organization. He could even, like many others have done this season, earn a contract in the AHL and help the Rocket next season.
If the Lions are indeed interested in the Russian, he should seriously consider accepting the offer. It would be a great opportunity for him to make a name for himself again. Not to mention that his wife, who has followed him since 2019 in Europe, could come back home.
An interesting case to follow during the summer!
