With the recent signings of excellent young players drafted in 2019, such as Matt Boldy and Dylan Cozens, the issue of Cole Caufield's next contract is starting to get a lot of attention in Montreal again.
Most experts agree that Caufield's next pact with the Habs should be a 7 or 8 year deal, worth $7-9 million annually.
However, an expert from The Athletic, Shayna Goldman, who is extremely well respected in the business, just made a statement that is causing a huge stir.
As reported by InTheCoulisses, check out the statement in question:
"A short-term deal would probably keep the contract value around $2 million to $3 million.
A longer-term deal, however, could push it closer to $5 million."
- Shayna Goldman
Excuse me? Let's just say it would be a surprise and an incredible bargain for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens, but let's just say it would be extremely surprising to see Caufield sign for that kind of money.
Dylan Cozens' freshly signed contract seems like a much better comparable.
It should be noted that Shayna Goldman is an expert who relies heavily on analytical models. So that might explain it, but still!
Let's mention that Caufield has scored 48 goals in his last 83 games, so he can score 50 per season. So, even on a shorter term contract, he's definitely going to get a lot more than $2 million per season.
The expert in question is probably relying on Caufield's defensive lapses, and perhaps his size, but again, he's already on a 50-goal per season pace.
This must make Kent Hughes dream, and we had to share it with you, but in our opinion, you should absolutely not expect such a low paying contract (in NHL terms) for Cole Caufield.
