Over the past few years, Marc Bergevin has been good during the off-season, where he repeated some genius moves. However, this year, he started off badly this off-season. First, he selected Logan Mailloux, the player who did not want to be drafted because of a sexual misconduct. His selection shook the earth and many people have been criticizing the Montreal Canadiens ever since.
Bergevin may not have learned his lesson as he could bring back a certain Chris Wideman to the NHL. You know, the Wideman who was involved in the Uber story in Arizona back in 2018 when the Senators were visiting the Coyotes? Wideman, Matt Duchene and five other Senators players from that time were filmed in an Uber and they were mocking Martin Raymond, who was back then an assistant coach with the team.
That being said, Wideman, now 31 years old, certainly paid more than the others for that story, as he had spent four years with the organization before his departure. In short, he played in the KHL last year after a season and a half in the AHL and then scored 41 points, including nine goals, in 59 games with the Nizhny Novgorod Torpedo. He won the award for best defenseman in the league!
Wideman moves the puck well and has excellent footwork, which could perhaps help the Montreal Canadiens' massive offense to generate something. Note that he will be available to all 32 NHL teams when the free agent market opens on July 28th.
