Toronto Maple Leafs star forward Auston Matthews set a personal best on Sunday night. With a goal late in the third period, in the last second of the game, he surpassed his highest total in a season.
In addition to setting a personal best, the American's 48th goal of the season puts him in 1st place among league scorers. He is ahead of Leon Draisaitl, who has 47, and Chris Kreider, who has 44. The race for the Maurice Richard trophy will be very interesting between now and the end of the season. The Leafs forward won the award last season with 41 goals in 51 games.
In addition to reaching a personal high in goals, Matthews has already reached a personal high in points. To date, the forward has accumulated 83 points, which is three more than his highest (80), achieved in 2019-2020 in just 70 games.
