As we know, Wright is not considered a generational player and some experts are not convinced that he should be the first pick in the 2022 draft.
There are other excellent players available, as Mathias Brunet mentioned, who even suggested that Kent Hughes trade his first-ever pick in exchange for the sixth and twelfth overall pick.
Brunet, who is also a regular contributor on 91.9 Sports, was on hand for his daily column and as reported by my colleague Alex Déry of Fanadiens.com, Brunet suggested a surprising player he would see very well with the Habs, Czech defenseman David Jiricek.
The man who is considered the fourth best prospect among European skaters is currently playing with Plzen HC, where he has 11 points in 29 games. He also represented his country at the World Junior Championship which was cut short by the pandemic last December.
However, with the Habs having the first overall pick and the backup on defense filled with good youngsters, it would be pretty surprising if Kent Hughes selected Jiricek at the very top of the order.
On the other hand, if Brunet's proposal materializes and the CH receives the number 6 and 12 picks, then Hughes could certainly select him at number 6 or 12, but well, that remains to be seen!
Jiricek is compared to Moritz Seider by many experts and Brunet's trade proposal is far from ridiculous, if the past is any indication:
2021 - Owen Power for Simon Edvinsson and Cole Sillinger
2020 - Alexis Lafreniere for Jamie Drysdale and Anton Lundell
2019 - Jack Hughes versus Moritz Seider and Matthew Boldy
2018 - Rasmus Dahlin vs. Filip Zadina and Noah Dobson
2017 - Nico Hischier vs. Cody Glass and Martin Necas
2016 - Auston Matthews vs. Matthew Tkachuk and Michael McLeod
