Calgary Flames send message to Montreal about Johnny Gaudreau

One of the best forwards in the NHL this season, and a strong candidate for the famous Hart Trophy, awarded to the most valuable player on his team, he will be free as a bird in a few months.

We're talking about Johnny "Hockey" Gaudreau.

This is certainly a case that is attracting a lot of attention, as many observers and fans (from different teams) have started to dream about Gaudreau. There have been many rumours about him in the Eastern Conference for almost two years now, and journalist Kevin Allen mentioned this recently:

"There are a lot of whispers in the NHL, behind the scenes, that Johnny Gaudreau has every intention of playing in the East next season." - Kevin Allen

Gaudreau is having an incredible season with 107 points, including 38 goals, in 76 games. His value is huge right now and he's going to ask for a huge contract (with good reason).

In response to these "whispers", the Flames organization has just sent a very clear message to Montreal (to Montreal fans and Montreal journalists, who are hoping and speculating):

"We are going to move heaven and earth and do everything we can to get Johnny back here. You've seen him all season long. He's one of the best players, not just offensively, but because of what he does without the puck." - Brad Treliving

They really have no intention of letting him leave and sign in the East anytime soon. However, if Gaudreau decides to leave this summer, it will be his choice. (He will be an unrestricted free agent)

And the price will be considerable. We're talking over $9 million per season, long-term.

Would you give him a long term contract at over $9 million per season to acquire him? Gaudreau's undisputed idol was a certain Martin St-Louis (and he clearly mentioned it) but hey, we're still far from tangible proof.

This will be one of the biggest issues to watch closely in July.
