As the expansion draft approached, all teams were required to file their protection list with the NHL. When Marc Bergevin completed it, Jake Allen was "locked in" and not Carey Price, who would undergo surgery a few hours later.
Bergevin originally wanted to protect Carey, who is like his son, but number 31 met with his boss to persuade him to protect Jake Allen instead of trading him before the expansion draft. Price was aware of his condition and his contract, which made Ron Francis very cold.
Pierre LeBrun simply filed this information, while specifying that the San Jose Sharks were among the teams VERY interested in adding the services of the 31-year-old goaltender.
In hindsight, it's clear that Price has, in a way, saved the Montreal Canadiens, especially since he will be out for a very long time. I'm told that he won't be back before the Holidays and that he could even miss the whole season... OUCH!!!
