According to information obtained by Ken Campbell, Eric Staal is about to sign a professional contract with the Iowa Wild of the AHL in the coming days.
His goal would be to get back into a game rhythm, in hopes of joining Team Canada for the Beijing Olympics in February.
"I just spoke with Eric Staal, he is currently on his way to Iowa. His plan is to sign a professional tryout contract in the AHL to play for the Iowa Wild this weekend and next week as he hopes to represent Canada at the Olympics. There's nothing certain yet, but that's the plan in place." - Ken Campbell
Eric Staal's ultimate goal would be to return to the NHL after the Olympics to compete for a Stanley Cup.
Staal played in the 2021 Stanley Cup Final with the Montreal Canadiens, but lost in five games to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
I would put my hand in the fire that the 37-year-old veteran could be of interest to several clubs that aspire to the big honors, considering his experience. He played no less than 1293 NHL games in the regular season and 83 duels in the playoffs.
