They did this so that he could keep his Iron Man Streak alive and continue his streak of games played in a row.
There's a new twist on this story.
Kessel (who just got engaged) was not at all convinced of the proposed plan to save his Iron Man Streak.
He really wasn't sure he wanted to play 30 seconds of the game, then get a ride home to watch his daughter be born.
He was perfectly willing to give up his back-to-back game sequence and miss the game in question. (the one where he played the first 30 seconds)
But, his fiancée interfered. He was just going to miss the game, until his fiancée, Sandra, convinced him to do it and play the first 30 seconds. She knew it was important to him and his teammates.
Unbelievable.
Plus, Phil ended up coming back in time, and he witnessed the birth of his daughter. The plan worked perfectly.
Recall that at this point, Kessel was in a very long sequence of games played. (a sequence that is still alive, by the way)
In fact, he hadn't missed a game since March 11, 2009, which put his streak at 955 games before that game.
It should also be noted that Kessel's wife was about to give birth to their first child. In order for him to be able to attend this unique event, the Coyotes organization went all out.
First, the Coyotes allowed Kessel to get an ice time, extending his streak of consecutive games played to 956. The veteran forward, after receiving handshakes from his teammates, left the game to join his spouse. The organization had booked a flight for him so he wouldn't miss the birth of his child!
