Now that the NHL trade deadline has passed, most observers of the Habs are looking ahead.

Notably on TVA Sports, Jean-Charles Lajoie, Anthony Martineau and Nicolas Cloutier tried to predict the club's defensive brigade for the 2022-23 season. They are unanimous on one thing: there will be youngsters who will have spots and Jeff Petry will be gone.

However, one of the topics that sparked an interesting debate was the presence (or not) of Kris Letang in the Habs lineup next season.

Martineau believes that it would be illogical to sign Letang:

"Just make me explain the logic behind the decision to draft this guy with the CH when you just gave away Toffoli, Chiarot and Lehkonen. [...] But why do you want Letang in Montreal? If that's the case, you should have kept Toffoli. There is no guideline in the plan to bring the defenseman here. It's completely illogical!"

That's when the guys started talking about money.

"Nobody said anything about him (Letang) asking for eight million!" - JiC

"He will ask for between seven and eight! He will never come to Montreal for four million!" - Martineau

This is where Lajoie gets ahead of himself on an exact example of the contract the Montreal Canadiens should offer to defenseman Kris Letang :

"There is a nuance between four and eight! Me I think that 20 million for four years, five million per year, we have an agreement. But if you go over five million, don't come, Kris." - JiC

At that price, would you sign Letang in Montreal? Or would you agree with Martineau?

It will be really interesting to see what the Habs 2022-23 defensive brigade will look like, but one thing is for sure, it promises.

Here's an example:

Edmundson - Letang

Romanov - Savard

Harris - Barron

(Schueneman - Guhle)
