GM Julien BriseBois traded veteran defenseman Ryan McDonagh to the Nashville Preds for defenseman Philippe Myers and 23-year-old forward Grant Mismash.
As my colleague Keven Mawn of Fanadiens.com reports, this is a deal that just hurt Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens.
Why?
For months, Hughes has been trying to build a deal and trying to build a solid trade for his club, including veteran defenseman Jeff Petry.
With what BriseBois and the Lightning just received for McDonagh, Petry's value has certainly gone down.
After seeing this, a GM probably won't want to pay the price to acquire Jeff Petry.
NHL executives rely heavily on recent trades as a basis for their offers and decisions.
Considering that Jeff Petry and Ryan McDonagh have similar values, and considering that they are similar defensemen, today's trade (between Tampa and Nashville) becomes the new reference.
You can be sure that Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton were not very happy today when they heard about this trade.
Petry: 34 years old, 3 years at $6.25 million
McDonagh: 33 years old, 4 years at $6.7 million
Do you think Petry will be traded anyway? If so, expect that the best thing we'll get, in return, is probably only space under the salary cap.
