For several weeks now, it is no secret that Kent Hughes has been looking to acquire a right-handed defenseman, and ideally one with NHL experience, to mentor his youngsters.

Despite the addition of Johnathan Kovacevic, Hughes may be looking for another short-term alternative, and he may have one right now (for free).

Yesterday, the giant 6 feet 7 inches and 220 pounds defenseman, Andrej Sustr, was placed on waivers from the Minnesota Wild.

We're talking about a defensive-minded defenseman with 361 career NHL games (experience) and nearly 50 playoff appearances. Sustr, 31, is signed through the end of this season and makes $750,000.

Now, when we heard that he was placed on waivers, we didn't pay too much attention, but it was the excellent Marco D'Amico who gave us the heads up.

"A veteran right-handed defenseman is currently available on waivers and could bring experience without significantly improving the team. [...]

He makes the league minimum wage and could be sent to the AHL with the Rocket to help out the other young guys in Laval if things don't work out in Montreal.

We'll see if the Montreal Canadiens are tempted to go that route. [...]" - Marco D'Amico

There are other options clearly available, such as Michal Kempny, Nicolas Meloche and Scott Harrington. All defensemen who were recently placed on waivers. Will Kent Hughes add a new defenseman today?

We will have the answer at 2:00 pm. Do you think Kent Hughes should claim Sustr, or should he acquire another one, like Meloche?
