Days before signing a surprise contract worth $7 million annually with the Anaheim Ducks, John Klingberg had fired his agent. According to what is now reported by Jeff Marek in the most recent 32 Thoughts, the ex-advisor would have, to say the least, advised him rather poorly precisely.

Early last season, the ex-agent advised the defenseman to turn down an 8-year offer from the Dallas Stars for a total value of $58,000,000. Instead, his agent advised him to aim for an 8-year offer with $64,000,000 or $8,000,000 per season. That offer never came.

When the free agent market opened, Klingberg lowered his expectations and was now looking for a 7-year contract worth $42,000,000. The deal has already cost the defenseman $16,000,000 in total salary. But there were no teams interested in the new terms.

Klingberg ended up signing a one-year contract worth $7 million with the Anaheim Ducks. It's no wonder Klingberg fired his agent after he cost them a guaranteed salary of nearly $51M.
