However, according to Elliotte Friedman (Sportsnet), Letang and the Penguins are very far from a deal. The two sides are "not at all on the same page".
The chances seem good that the veteran defenseman becomes free as a bird in July and decides to agree with another organization.
Some rumors are sending him to Montreal (notably fueled by his good friend Renaud Lavoie), but even Letang has already declared that the Habs would probably be his second choice. (after the Penguins)
In short, this will be a really interesting file to watch.
But if Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton ever offer him a contract, what kind of deal can we expect? How long? After all, Letang is now 35 years old and has a lot of playoff hockey in his body (he's been playing very big minutes for almost 15 years).
He's still dominant though, he's amassed an impressive 68 points (10 goals) in 78 games this season.
Letang has finally made up his mind about his future in the NHL. Does he want to play one more year? two years? three years? Does he want a longer term contract than that?
Kristopher Letang has said he wants to play five more years, and that fits perfectly with the information we had this winter.
So he should (most likely) ask for a 4 or 5 year contract, worth over $7 million annually. Would you like the CH to offer him?
He also added that his health is fine, he is in great shape and his retirement still seems far away, in his eyes.
He believes he can play at least five more seasons. He is training hard to stay dominant until he is 40 years old and he takes it very seriously.
