Even though he's been absent since January 19th, Cole Caufield still sits atop the Canadiens' leading goal scorers with 26 goals in 46 games. It's unclear whether the young American forward could have become the first Habs player since Stéphane Richer to reach the 50-goal milestone, but he likely would have reached the 40-goal mark.

Since his absence due to a shoulder injury, much speculation has surrounded Caufield's future contract, and according to a report by Charles-Alexis Brisebois of Danslescoulisses.com, there seems to be a major development.

During the broadcast of The Sick Podcast, TVA Sports journalist Marc-André Perreault stated that he had heard a contract would be announced before the end of the regular season.

However, Perreault is not the only source reporting that Caufield's future contract is nearly settled. Tony Marinaro also mentioned to host Jean-Charles Lajoie on BPM Sports that there have been many Zoom meetings between Pat Brisson, Caufield's agent, Kent Hughes, Jeff Gorton, and Cole Caufield himself.

This is a major development.

Wow! It sounds like there are some intense discussions happening, and it's likely that there will be some very good news for Canadiens fans by the end of the season.

Exciting times!
