Tuesday night on his excellent Sick Podcast, Tony Marinaro chatted with Mike Ribeiro, who is still quite a character.
That said, unlike Marinaro, who wants absolutely nothing to do with Patrick Roy as the Montreal Canadiens' general manager, Ribeiro believes the former number 33 remains the only solution to bringing this team back.
In his eyes, Roy imposes fear and respect, so the players would make sure to be straight as an oak tree and work hard and never stop. Mike, this isn't 1987, when coaches were kicking garbage cans. Besides, it's not the job of a GM to go down to the locker room and scare people.
Anyway, this part of his interview makes sense, but the part that sticks out is when he talks about himself as head coach to guide the Montreal Canadiens. Was he denying it or what? Nope. He was VERY serious, believe me. Here is the translation of what he said, courtesy of my colleague Christian Matte.
- Ribeiro: After Patrick, you have to call a coach named Mike.
- Marinaro: Mike who?
- Ribeiro: Mike me!
- Marinaro : Wait a second, there is a Mike Yeo who is in Philadelphia, are you talking about yourself?
- Ribeiro : Yes!
- Marinaro : Okay, you think you're ready to coach the Habs?
- Ribeiro: In four years.
