Basically, we just learned that Cayden Primeau will get a real chance, and a real audition, in Montreal by the end of the season.
A turn of events that we did not see coming.
Concerning Primeau, let's remember that the Tricolore's management wanted him to play 100 games in the AHL, before trying to graduate to the NHL. Well, the young goalie just played his 100th regular season game with the Laval Rocket. (last Saturday)
There is more.
Starting next season, Cayden Primeau will have to go through the NHL waivers before being sent to the Laval Rocket. So, as soon as next fall, the Habs' management will have to make a big decision regarding Primeau's future in Montreal.
So will Primeau be a Montreal Canadiens goalie next season?
That's the question addressed by RDS' François Gagnon in his most recent article.
It's a big one, because the CH could lose Primeau (for nothing) to waivers next fall, so Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes absolutely must find out quickly where their young goalie stands, in order to make the best decision possible.
Does Primeau have a future in the NHL? As a starter? As a backup? They need to find out before next fall.
That would be why the Habs are going to give Primeau some games in Montreal between now and the end of the season (even if Jake Allen and Samuel Montembeault remain healthy).
So don't be surprised when this is announced.
The Canadiens will recall Cayden Primeau to the NHL, to test him, and they may be keeping three goalies with the big club for a while. (Allen, Primeau and Montembeault)
So Cayden Primeau's future in Montreal could really (already) be decided in the next few weeks, and his performance will be key to the big decision that will have to be made in the fall of 2023.
A file to follow!
