Yesterday, the Canadian team won the gold medal at the World Championship, defeating Germany by a score of 5 to 2. This victory gave the country its 28th title in this competition.
One of the key players in this competition has undoubtedly been goaltender Samuel Montembeault. He had an impressive tournament, with statistics to impress. He achieved a record of 6-1, one shutout, a goals-against average of 1.42, and a save percentage of .939 in 7 games during the competition. That's quite impressive!
The Becancour native has definitely stepped up a level this season in his progression. He has managed to show the Canadiens' management that he can very well be the team's number one. Maybe Kent Hughes and his crew will change their plans on this subject?
Montembeault speaks out about his future with the Canadiens
The 26-year-old goalie has one more season on his contract, valued at $1 million. He will be able to sign a contract extension as of July 1st.
He recently mentioned to the JdM that he wants to resolve this issue as soon as possible.
"Yes, I'm thinking about it a little. But I would really like to sign an extension. Jake Allen got an extension before the start of the last season, while Jordan Harris did it during the season. I still have a full year to look at this. We haven't talked much about it, but I know it's a possibility," he replied.
"I don't think they will do it right on July 1st, they will look at other issues. There's no rush. I want to play in Montreal, I love it so much." - Samuel Montembeault Kent Hughes should not take any chances and should secure the goaltending position as soon as possible. Because behind Montembeault, the future looks weak with Allen and Primeau.
Moreover, to highlight the feats of Montembeault (and Justin Barron), the organization has issued an official statement.
