With the personnel moves that the Chicago Blackhawks made before the trade deadline, many believe that the organization will be heading towards a complete rebuild. With their poor results as well as the numerous scandals that have affected the team, a reset would not be out of place.
With this wind of change, it would not be surprising if the two big names of the franchise, Jonathan Toews and Patrik Kane, leave the ship to help in the rebuilding. On this subject, Toews admitted last week to being discouraged by the direction taken by the organization.
"The direction our organization is going in has become pretty obvious, and I can't lie, it was disappointing to see some good friends leave, regardless of what the future holds," the Blackhawks captain said Wednesday. This group has been through a lot this season, both on and off the ice. Things have been strange and difficult for a lot of people for quite some time." - Jonathan Toews
Regarding Kane, trade rumors are already starting to circulate. According to what John Vogl, who covers the Buffalo Sabres, reports, it wouldn't be surprising if the New York State team welcomed the prolific forward, who is a native of the area.
Even in a tough year with the Hawks, Kane still managed to produce. He has scored 21 goals and added 57 assists this season for a combined total of 78 points in just 62 games.
While the Sabres may not seem like the most attractive destination from a field hockey standpoint, the team is currently 28 points out of a playoff spot this season, the fact is that the Sabres have looked much better in the latter stages of the season. While Vogl seems to believe that this move would make sense, he cautioned against such a deal given how much of the future the Sabres would have to mortgage to make this deal.
"Two or more first picks is the likely starting point. With the Sabres' window just opening, that's too much for a guy with only one year left on his contract." - John Vogl
Instead, Vogl would like to see the Sabres wait for Kane to finish out his contract and for the organization to work out a deal with him on the free agent market. Of course, that would open up the risk of Kane re-signing with the Chicago Blackhawks or perhaps even a team willing to trade for him in the final year of his current contract, but the Sabres tipster seems to think the risk is worth taking.
