Today, Kent Hughes made his first major trade as the new GM of the Montreal Canadiens.
While the Flames did get their hands on Toffoli, the Habs organization received, in exchange: a 2022 first-round pick, a 2024 fifth-round pick, young prospect Emil Heineman and fourth-line player Tyler Pitlick.
The Canadian does not retain any salary in the transaction.
To learn more about Heineman:
There is something important to note. The Flames made an important addition, a precision in the trade.
They took inspiration from Marc Bergevin (in the trade involving Christian Dvorak) and they protected their freshly traded first-round pick:
- «Currently ranked 13th overall in the NHL and second in their division, the Flames have still protected their 2022 1st round pick in the trade. If the pick ends up being top-10 in the next draft, the Canadiens would instead get Calgary's 1st round pick in 2023." - HABSolumentFan
This is an important clarification to add, and we will see this more and more often in transactions.
