It's interesting for fans in general, obviously, but it's also particularly interesting for Montreal Canadiens fans.
Why? Let's remember that the CH organization owns the Panthers' 2023 first round pick and, more importantly, let's remember that this pick is unprotected.
Reactions are numerous since last night and opinions are quite divided, but one thing is clear and unanimous: the Florida Panthers are a worse team today, compared to yesterday (they have a worse team for the 2022-23 season)
They lost one of the best wingers in the world, their best scorer and the second best scorer in the league. And most importantly, they lost the services of their second best defenseman (who is one of the most complete in the league)
This could really affect the team's performance in 2022-2023, which is good for Montreal. At this point, it really becomes less tempting to trade the Panthers' first 2023 pick:
It seems unanimous, their defensive squad is really very questionable:
Imagine if, with this trade, the Panthers' pick becomes a Lottery Pick, in one of the best drafts in a long time. This could really become a home run for Kent Hughes and the CH.
See just here the Panthers' potential new trios and duos for next season. Notice the big lack of depth on offense and the very questionable defense:
